What is Trichomonas?
Trichomonas Vaginalis is a small organism called a protozoan. This type of organism is very similar to a bacterium. The Trichomonas protozoan can infect the vagina and urethra in a woman and the urethra and occasionally the prostate gland in men. Trichomonas is normally passed by sexual contact.

Should I be worried about Trichomonas?
Trichomonas is less of a problem than other sexually transmitted infections, as it tends not to penetrate deep inside the body beyond the urethra. It can occasionally cause prostatitis in men and can lead to increased risk of early labor and a low birth weight baby in the case of pregnant women. As with most STDs, a Trichomonas infection will make you more susceptible to HIV infection if you have unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive.


What are the symptoms of Trichomonas?
Women
  • An unusual discharge, which can be a greenish-yellow color. The discharge can sometimes be rather frothy with a fishy odor.
  • Pain when passing urine.
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Sometimes there will be a pain in the groin area, although this is less common.
  • The vulva and vagina may itch and there may be a general feeling of discomfort.
Men
  • A discharge from the urethra is common.
  • It may be painful when passing urine.
  • A rise in the frequency of urination caused by the irritation of the infection.
It is important to remember that 50% of both men and women experience absolutely no symptoms at all of a Trichomonas infection. Even if you do not have symptoms, this will not prevent you from transmitting the infection to someone else.

Can Trichomonas be treated?
Trichomonas is very easily treated with Metronidazole, which is normally taken as a 7 days course. If you test positive for Trichomonas then we will prescribe Metronidazole free of charge but you must have any sexual partners treated at the same time for their safety and to prevent you from being re-infected. We can also prescribe Tinidazole in certain cases of Trichomonas infection. You should not have unprotected sex until the treatment has finished and any symptoms have cleared up.

The Trichomoniasis test offered by Aware Home Test is a urine-based test technically named the "Trichomoniasis Vaginalis RNA Qualitative TMA" test. Due to the nature of the test, we can only offer this test through our at-home collection kit that you can use from the comfort of your own home

Any preparation for the Trichomonas Vaginalis Test?
The only required preparation is to not urinate for at least one hour before collecting your sample.

Test results are read visually after 20 minutes, without use of any instruments.

What do the test results mean?
Trichomonas Vaginalis Present (positive): This means you have an active infection that requires treatment with Metronidazole, which is normally taken as a 7 days course. You should not have unprotected sex until the treatment has finished and any symptoms have cleared up.

Trichomonas Vaginalis NOT Present (negative): This means with high accuracy that you are NOT infected with Trichomonas Vaginalis bacteria.

PRECAUTIONS
  • Carefully follow the instructions exactly.
  • Only use the included pipette.
  • This kit is for in vitro use only. Do not swallow.
  • Contaminated blood may cause erroneous results.
  • Discard after first use. The test can only be used once.
  • Do not use test kit beyond the expiration date.
  • Do not use the kit if the pouch is punctured or not well sealed.
  • Keep out of children's reach.
STORAGE AND STABILITY
  • Store at 4?C to 30?C in the sealed pouch up to expiration date.
  • Keep away from sunlight, moisture and heat.
  • Use the test shortly after opening the pouch.
  • Do not freeze.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND PREPARATION

A. Endocervical sample (Females)
Remove any excess mucus from the potentially infected site with the first swab, and then discard it. Insert the second swab into the endocervical canal until most of the tip is no longer visible; Rotate the swab for 15-30 seconds. Carefully withdraw the swab without touching the vaginal surface.

B. Endourethral sample (Males)
Insert the swab into the urethra of the penis and rotate for 3-5 seconds and withdraw.

C. Urine specimen
Collect 20-40 ml urine specimen. First morning specimens are preferred.

TEST PROCEDURE
  • When the test has been stored in a cold room, wait for it to reach room temperature (10?C - 30?C).
  • Add 5 drops of reagent 1 to the extraction tube. Place the specimen swab in the tube and swirl thoroughly for 10 seconds. Leave at room temperature (10?C - 30?C) for 5 minutes, with the swab in the tube.
  • Swirl the swab 2-3 times for a few seconds during the extraction step, pressing it against the wall of the tube to expel the liquid and insure thorough contact of reagents and specimen.
  • At the end of the 5 minutes, thoroughly remove as much extract from the swab as possible by raising it above the liquid level and squeezing the extraction tube.
  • Remove swab and then add 5 drops of reagent 2.
  • The extract can remain at room temperature for up to 30 minutes without affecting the test results.
  • In the case of urine specimen, use the tube with precipitate for detection. Add 5 drops of reagent 1 into the tube and mix well. After 5 minutes, add 5 drops of reagent 2 and mix well.
  • Remove the test cassette from its sealed foil pouch by tearing at the notch. Dispense 4 drops of liquid from the extraction tube into the sample well of the test device by inverting and squeezing the tube.


HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULT
Results can be read at 15-20 minutes. 20 minutes should be allowed to confirm a negative result.

Note: There is no meaning attributed to line color intensity or width.

Positive (Trichomoniasis infection):
Rose-pink bands are visible both in the control region and the test region. The sample should be considered positive for Trichomoniasis infection.

Negative (no infection):
A rose-pink band is visible in the control region. No color band appears in the test region. The sample should be considered negative for Trichomoniasis infection.

Invalid:
There are no colored lines or only a colored line in the test region. The most common reason for an invalid test result is that the test procedure was not carried out properly.
