Do I Need to be Tested for Syphilis?
If you are sexually active, you run the risk of becoming infected with syphilis and many other sexually transmitted infections and diseases. Getting tested not only protects your health, but you partner's sexual health as well. It's suggested that you get tested if you have multiple new partners, engage in high risk or unprotected sexual activity or enter into a monogamous relationship.

Here is a list of factors that make getting tested even more important: If you have, or have had, a partner in the past who had syphilis, If you are pregnant, If you have symptoms.

Though it is very difficult to tell the symptoms of syphilis apart from other diseases or to even notice it at all in the early stages, it is extremely important to be tested for syphilis as well as other STDs if you experience any unusual symptoms. If you notice one or more open sores (usually not painful), rashes on the hands and feet or any other unusual things about your body, you should be tested right away.

Undiagnosed syphilis is a lifetime infection and if ignored, has very serious outcomes.

You may have syphilis and not know it.
While some people develop visible symptoms of syphilis infection, others don't. Depending on where you are having sex, you might not be able to see if your sex partner has symptoms of syphilis. Symptoms or not, if you have syphilis you can still get very sick and give syphilis to others.

Stages of syphilis infection:
About three weeks (any where from 10 to 90 days) after you have sex with someone who has syphilis, you may develop a painless sore (called a "chancre") on your penis, near your anus (ass, bum), in your throat, or for trans guys, the frontal genital area. You may or may not notice that you have a chancre. The sore may go away by itself after 3-6 weeks; however you are still infected with syphilis. It's very easy to pass on syphilis to someone at this stage of infection. This is referred to as the "primary" stage.

Four to 10 weeks after the chancre appears, you may notice a red rash on your chest, palms, genitals, or the soles of your feet. You might also have muscle and joint pain, fever and patchy hair loss. These symptoms may also disappear without treatment, but you can still pass on syphilis to sexual partners. This is referred to as the "secondary" stage.

If syphilis is not treated in the secondary stage you can still pass it on to sex or drug partners for a year from the time you got syphilis, even though you don't have any symptoms. This is referred to as the "early latent" stage.

Finally, there is a long period without any symptoms.
However, the syphilis bacteria continue to live in your body and can cause serious damage to your heart, brain, eyes and bones. It may take from 10 to 30 years before this damage is seen but can occur much earlier if you also have HIV. Fortunately, syphilis can be detected and treated before it reaches this stage. This stage is referred to as the "late" or "tertiary" stage. It is less likely that you will pass on syphilis to someone at this stage of infection. Of great concern has been the appearance of cases of tertiary syphilis among those who are HIV-positive, within a very short period of time (six months after infection with syphilis, as opposed to 10 to 30 years).

What is the Syphilis (anti-tp) whole blood test kit?
The Home Aware Syphilis (anti-tp) antibody test is a simple blood test which detects the presence of antibodies to bacteria treponema pallidum. The Syphilis (anti-tp) antibody is a protein naturally produced in the body in response to an infection by the bacteria treponema pallidum. The antibody screening test is important because it provides you with an early indication that you have been infected with Syphilis. Early indication can help minimize the likelihood of developing an illness related to Syphilis.

Test results are read visually after 15 minutes, without use of any instruments.

What will the test tell me?
A positive test result shows that the antibody has been found in your blood. If the person is tested positive, you have an infection that requires treatment with a course of antibiotics, preferably penicillin.

A negative test result shows that the antibody has not been found in your blood. Antibodies may not be able to be detected for up to three months after exposure to the bacteria, and the antibodies remain in the body for years, perform the test again in 180 days of probable infection.

Positive (Syphilis infection):
Colored lines are visible in the control region and the test region. This means that infection by Syphilis Treponema pallidum.

The intensity of the color of the lines varies due to different concentrations of Syphilis antibodies but also other blood values and therefore no meaning is attributed to line color intensity or width.

Negative (No Syphilis infection):
One colored line is visible in the control region and no colored line in the test region. This means that no Syphilis infection was detected.

Invalid:
There are no colored lines or only a colored line in the test region. The most common reason for an invalid test result is that the test procedure was not carried out properly.
