What is Herpes?
Herpes Simplex Virus or HSV is a viral infection. The 2 common types are Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV 1) and Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV 2). Herpes 2 is commonly known as genital herpes. While either virus can infect oral or genital skin, a simple way to think of it is this - HSV 1 usually causes cold sores in and around the mouth and HSV 2 is most often found with herpes down below. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that at least 45 million people in the U.S. have genital herpes. And, if you've had a cold sore, you probably have oral herpes. Most of us, around 65% of Americans, do.

Are there Herpes symptoms?
Well, not always. Oral herpes can show up as painful cold sores in and around your mouth. Genital herpes symptoms, or Herpes 2, can be a "no show" for quite a while. Until it's not. When genital herpes symptoms show up, they can bring on itching and burning down below, painful urination, and blisters on your private parts. Sores and other symptoms of herpes are called "outbreaks". But you can have herpes and not get an outbreak for years after the first infection. Without herpes symptoms that you can feel or see, the only way to know you have herpes is to get tested.


How do you get Herpes?
You can get herpes from skin to skin contact, oral, vaginal, and anal sex. The easiest way for herpes to spread is when there is an open, active sore. But you can still get herpes when there's no outbreak at all. We'll say that again. You can get herpes even when your partner is not having symptoms or showing any open sores.

So, how can herpes be prevented?
While unpopular, not having sex at all is the only way to be 100% safe from STDs. But if you're sexually active, latex condoms help drop the risk of transmission. Studies show that when a partner has herpes and takes the drug Valtrex daily, the risk of transmitting the virus is reduced by nearly 50%.

Tell me about the Herpes Simplex (HSV 1/2) Antibody Test.
The most accurate test for herpes is the Herpes Simplex (HSV 1/2) Antibody Test, so there's no undressing and no swabbing involved. It's a "IgG-based type-specific" blood test, which means it can differentiate between Herpes 1 and Herpes 2. This herpes test looks for antibodies that develop in the blood to fight the virus. They can be detected even if no symptoms or outbreaks are present.

The window period for antibodies to develop after infection can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months. In the early stage of infection, antibodies may not reach detectable levels, so a "false negative" result is possible. If you feel you are at risk for the virus and may have tested too early, re-testing for confirmation of the diagnosis is recommended after the reconversion period or 6 weeks after exposure.

What do the test results mean?
HSV-1/2 Antibodies Present (positive): This means you have a herpes 1-2 infection, the virus is dormant in your sacral nerves, and you have genital herpes. For most people, Herpes 1 presents in the mouth area.

HSV-1/2 Antibodies NOT Present (negative): This means with high accuracy that you do not have herpes, unless it was contracted very recently. Recent studies have shown that by 6 weeks after exposure, 60-75% of patients will have positive test results. 20% of patients may develop detectable antibodies later, as long as 6 months after exposure. Once antibodies are made, the test stays positive.

PRECAUTIONS
  • Carefully follow the instructions exactly.
  • Only use the included pipette.
  • This kit is for in vitro use only. Do not swallow.
  • Contaminated blood may cause erroneous results.
  • Discard after first use. The test can only be used once.
  • Do not use test kit beyond the expiration date.
  • Do not use the kit if the pouch is punctured or not well sealed.
  • Keep out of children's reach.

STORAGE AND STABILITY
  • Store at 4?C to 30?C in the sealed pouch up to expiration date.
  • Keep away from sunlight, moisture and heat.
  • Use the test shortly after opening the pouch.
  • Do not freeze.

TEST PROCEDURE
  • When the test have been stored in a cold room, wait for it to reach room temperature (10-30?C).
  • Wash the hands thoroughly to avoid contamination of the specimen.
  • Open the pouch and place the cassette on a level surface.
  • Clean the area to be lanced with the alcohol pad. Wait for the area to dry completely (do not blow on it).
  • Use the safety lancet and pipette. The safety lancet can only be used once.
Twist off the protective cap, and then pull it straight out.
Press the lancet firmly against the puncture site to activate the device.
Gently apply intermittent pressure near the puncture site to obtain the required blood volume.

  • Squeeze the pipette together and collect blood by slowly releasing the pressure.
  • Add One drop of blood, from the pipette, to the round well of the cassette.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
  • Add Two drops of buffer solution, from the bottle, to the round well of the cassette
  • If the liquid is not moving across the membrane within one minute, add one more drop of buffer solution to the round well of the cassette.


HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULT
Read the result after 15 minutes. Do not read the result after 20 minutes.

HSV-1/2 Antibodies Present (positive):
Colored lines are visible in the control region and the test region. This means you have a herpes 1-2 infection, the virus is dormant in your sacral nerves, and you have genital herpes. For most people, Herpes 1 presents in the mouth area.

HSV-1/2 Antibodies NOT Present (negative):
One colored line is visible in the control region and no colored line in the test region. This means with high accuracy that you do not have herpes, unless it was contracted very recently. Recent studies have shown that by 6 weeks after exposure, 60-75% of patients will have positive test results. 20% of patients may develop detectable antibodies later, as long as 6 months after exposure. Once antibodies are made, the test stays positive.

Invalid:
There are no colored lines or only a colored line in the test region. The most common reason for an invalid test result is that the test procedure was not carried out properly.
