Hepatitis C Overview
Hepatitis C is one type of hepatitis - a liver disease - caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It usually spreads through contact with infected blood. It can also spread through sex with an infected person and from mother to baby during childbirth.

Most people who are infected with hepatitis C don't have any symptoms for years. A blood test can tell if you have it. Usually, hepatitis C does not get better by itself. The infection can last a lifetime and may lead to scarring of the liver or liver cancer.

Medicines sometimes help, but side effects can be a problem. Serious cases may need a liver transplant.

Hepatitis C Symptoms
Although hepatitis C damages the liver, 80% of people with the disease do not have symptoms. In those who do,symptoms may not appear for10-20 years, or even longer. Even then, the symptoms usually come and go and are mild and vague. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms appear, the damage may be very serious.

A minority of people have symptoms during the early acute phase of the infection. These symptoms typically develop 5-12 weeks after exposure to HCV. Some people describe the symptoms as being flu like. The symptoms may last a few weeks or months.
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Pain over the liver (on the right side of the abdomen, just under the rib cage)
  • Jaundice - A condition in which the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow
  • Dark-colored urine (may look like cola or tea)
  • Stools become pale in color (grayish or clay colored)
Prolonged nausea and vomiting can cause dehydration.
If you have been vomiting repeatedly, you may notice the following symptoms:
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Headache
  • Not urinating
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue or weakness
Chronic hepatitis C can lead tocirrhosis of the liver in many people, a condition traditionally associated with alcoholism. Cirrhosis is a condition in which healthy liver tissue is replaced by fibrous tissue, followed by scar-like hardening. As this happens, the liver gradually begins to fail, or lose its ability to carry out its normal functions. Eventually, symptoms develop. Symptoms of cirrhosis include the following:
  • Fluid retention causing swelling of the belly (ascites), legs, or whole body
  • Persistent jaundice
  • Fatigue
  • Disturbances in sleeping
  • Itchy skin
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, wasting
  • Vomiting with blood in the vomit
  • Mental disturbances such as confusion, lethargy, extreme sleepiness, or hallucinations (hepatic encephalopathy)

Tell me about the Hepatitis C test.
This blood test looks for antibodies to the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). If you get tested before there are enough antibodies to detect, you may get a "false negative" result but still have acute type C viral hepatitis. Also, you may have a positive result if you were exposed and treated for this virus in the past. This test cannot tell if you still have an active viral infection. The CDC suggests that "weakly positive" tests be confirmed with another test within 3 months.

What kind of sample is required Hepatitis C testing?
A blood sample are collect at home.

Any preparation for the Hepatitis C test?
None.

Test results are read visually after 15 minutes, without use of any instruments.

What do I have to know about the Hepatitis C results?
This test screens for the earliest indicator of acute Hepatitis C infection., the test results are either positive or negative. A negative result means there is no evidence of the virus or has recovered from acute hepatitis.

A positive result indicates an early infection. A negative result indicates that there is no active or prior infection. In general, if the Hepatitis C test is strongly positive, it could mean that the infection has been present for some time. The diagnosis is typically confirmed by the finding of the Hepatitis C RNA in serum with additional testing.

How is Hepatitis C treated?
Sometimes mild liver issues are left alone without therapeutic treatment. Your doctor may do what's called "watchful waiting" before starting treatment for Hepatitis C. Before any serious treatment begins, there needs to be a confirmatory diagnosis of chronic Hepatitis C. Chronic hepatitis C is diagnosed when antibodies are present for more than 6 months. It's important to note that there are other major health conditions that can be confused clinically with chronic Hepatitis C so RNA testing is typically ordered to confirm the diagnosis. Courses of antiviral medications like interferon, ribavirin, and combination therapies are used to manage the virus and liver function.

Antiviral medications can clear the virus.
Chronic Hepatitis C can be treated over time with a treat and test routine. While these medications can be very effective in managing the virus and liver symptoms, they can have serious side effects and may need to be stopped in certain cases.

Liver failure can be treated with a new, transplanted liver.
A last resort for livers on the verge of failure is a transplant. During a transplant, the surgeon removes the damaged liver and replaces it with a healthy one.

Hepatitis C Surface Antibody Test Cassette (Anti-HCV)

  • Wash the hands thoroughly to avoid contamination of the specimen.
  • Open the pouch and place the cassette on a level surface.
  • Clean the area to be lanced with the alcohol pad. Wait for the area to dry completely (do not blow on it).
  • Use the safety lancet and pipette. The safety lancet can only be used once.

  • Add One drop of blood, from the pipette, to the round well of the cassette.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
  • Add Two drops of buffer solution, from the bottle, to the round well of the cassette
  • If the liquid is not moving across the membrane within one minute, add one more drop of buffer solution to the round well of the cassette.

HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULT
Read the result after 15 minutes. Do not read the result after 20 minutes.A positive result may develop even sooner at a high concentration. However, the lower the concentration of the Anti-HCV, the longer time it takes to develop a test band; therefore, a negative result should be determined at 15 minutes to ensure it is truly negative instead of weak positive.

Positive (Hepatitis C infection):
Colored lines are visible in the control region and the test region. This means that infection by Hepatitis C have been detected. Another test is required 6 months later, if this test also is positive, the diagnosis is chronic Hepatitis C infection.

The intensity of the color of the lines varies due to different concentrations of Hepatitis C antibodies but also other blood values and therefore no meaning is attributed to line color intensity or width.

Negative (No Hepatitis C infection):
One colored line is visible in the control region and no colored line in the test region. This means that no Hepatitis C infection was detected.

Invalid:
There are no colored lines or only a colored line in the test region. The most common reason for an invalid test result is that the test procedure was not carried out properly.
